In a theatre setting a black box is needed.
In schools and other non theatrical settings it is best to at least draw the blinds so as not to have outside distractions for the audience.
The performance may also be given in a protected outdoor space if there is not too much outside noise interference and not in direct sun for either Matthias or the audience with the addition of a HF microphone and amplifiers provided by the organiser
Whether in a large room or on stage the set up is fairly simple. If on stage there must be stairs going down into the audience.
When his performance is not in a theatre Matthias usually has the children sit in a semi-circle on the floor in front of him, some on the floor and the others with their parents on chairs in a semi-circle. The main idea is to set up a intimate area where he can easily reach the children He places a band of tape on the floor to limit his space from the children's space. It is good to have a black back drop, but it is not absolutely necessary.
When touring by car in Europe Matthias provides his own lighting and needs only an electric socket in 220V to plug it in.
